Cyclone Ramel made landfall in the city around 8:30 p.m., lasting till 1:30 a.m. near the southwest of Mongla in Bangladesh. At its closest, the eye of the storm was 110 km east of Kolkata. The severe cyclone has now weakened into a cyclonic storm and is becoming less severe as it moves over land.
The intensity of Ramel was almost half that of supercyclones like Amphan. Rainfall in Kolkata is likely to decrease and is expected to last until this evening. Waterlogging has been reported in some areas of the city and its fringes, including Camac Street, College Street, and Burrabazar. Numerous trees have been uprooted across Kolkata, and flyovers have been closed for traffic movement.
Meanwhile flight and trains running have started operating normally. After 21 hours of closure Kolkata airport resumed normal services. Indigo flight to port Blair took off after 9am today.
